Learning And Opportunities

Learning at the Ubunifu Academy

The Ubunifu Academy creates room for marginalised creatives to learn, experiment, collaborate and grow. Through five fields of study and more than 15 creative disciplines, the Academy connects artistic practice with creative confidence, ethical storytelling, cultural expression and opportunities to develop work. Possible learning formats, depending on each cohort: practical workshops, mentorship, peer learning, studio practice, showcases and collaborative projects. Field 1: Performing Arts Develop performance, stagecraft, movement, voice, interpretation and live audience engagement through individual practice, ensemble work, rehearsal and presentation. Music — vocal/instrumental practice, songwriting, composition, rhythm, rehearsal and performance. Dance — movement vocabulary, choreography, improvisation, cultural and contemporary forms, ensemble work and performance. Theatre — acting, character development, script interpretation, devising, directing fundamentals, rehearsal and stage performance. Spoken Word and Poetry — writing, poetic form, voice, performance delivery, storytelling and audience connection. Performance Art — concept-led live art combining body, space, movement, sound, objects and social themes. Field 2: Visual Arts Explore visual communication, image-making, material, form and concept. Participants develop a personal practice and learn to document and present their work. Drawing — observation, line, form, composition, illustration and visual development. Painting — colour, surface, composition, material experimentation and visual storytelling. Sculpture — three-dimensional form, materials, construction methods and spatial thinking. Installation Art — creating an environment or arrangement of objects/media for a space or audience experience. Photography — composition, light, portraiture, documentary practice and ethical image use. Printmaking — image transfer and repeatable print processes using safe, accessible materials. Mixed Media — combining materials and techniques for layered, experimental, concept-driven work. Field 3: Design and Applied Arts Connect creative expression with design, craft, material knowledge, making and potential livelihood pathways. Fashion — fashion concepts, visual research, styling, garment ideas, presentation and collection development. Sewing and Tailoring — measuring, pattern basics, garment construction, finishing, repair and fit. Weaving and Textile Crafts — textile structures, fibre/material exploration, pattern, colour, surface design and craft traditions. Pottery and Ceramics — clay preparation, hand-building, forming, surface treatment and safe firing practices where facilities allow. Field 4: Film and Digital Media Develop visual and audio stories across screen-based and digital formats, from planning and production to editing, sound and responsible publication. Filmmaking — concept development, scripting, planning, camera practice, directing, production and post-production. Video Editing — selecting footage, pacing, transitions, titles, sound synchronisation, captions and export. Sound Design — recording, dialogue, ambience, effects, soundscapes, audio editing and mixing fundamentals. Animation — planning movement and visual sequences. Field 5: Ethical Journalism Develop responsible reporting, community documentation, verification, storytelling and media literacy. Journalism here is broader than breaking news: it can preserve community histories, document human-rights experiences and cultural practices, and report on environmental, gender, local and social-change issues. Emphasise accuracy, informed consent, source protection, fairness, accountability, safety and avoiding harm. Community Journalism — documenting/reporting community concerns, local knowledge, histories, cultural practices and social change. Reporting and Storytelling — story angles, interviews, report structure, evidence and clear communication. Investigative Journalism — research, corroboration, document review and careful verification of complex questions. Photojournalism — ethical visual reporting with context, captions and consent. Broadcast Journalism — audio/audiovisual reports, interviews, scripts, presenter links and programme segments. Digital Journalism — online stories, digital formats, verification and responsible audience engagement. Learning approach and student experience Practical, project-based learning with clear outcomes. Mentorship, peer exchange and feedback. Access to tools, equipment, studio space or referrals where available. Portfolio development, showcases and opportunities to connect with creative communities. Ethics, safeguarding, consent, accessibility and inclusive facilitation across all fields.
